On behalf of Rijkswaterstaat, contractor Martens and Van Oord will dredge at 7 different locations in the Maas and the Wessem-Nederweert canal. The work will start on April 14, 2025, and continue until the end of 2025.
By dredging, we remove deposited sand, gravel, silt, and clay from the waterbed. This keeps the waterway accessible and safe for ships.
Unexploded War Remnants
Preliminary research has shown that explosive war remnants may be present in the soil at the 7 dredging locations. Therefore, Martens and Van Oord deploys special equipment: including De Roeroord and the Multitool. Both are suitable for secure dredging.
During the operations, all iron-containing parts, including explosives, are stored in a secure container and removed. This enables us to dredge safely at these locations as well.
Planning and Dredging Disruption
The work will continue until the end of December 2025. For shipping, there may be speed restrictions and passage width limitations at the work locations. The work will take place on weekdays between 06:00 and 19:00. Possible noise disturbance for the surrounding area will, of course, be minimized.
Maintenance of Waterways in Southern Netherlands
We continuously work on accessible waterways, water quality, safety, and ecological values around the water. Together with others, we ensure the management and maintenance of the waterways in Southern Netherlands and the construction, maintenance, and design of waterworks, banks, and floodplains.
We always look for the common ground in a multitude of requirements, wishes, and interests. Disruptions and malfunctions are not always avoidable. Naturally, we minimize disruptions as much as possible and communicate about them in a timely manner.
