Rijkswaterstaat expects to start the tendering process for the first contract to renew the Van Brienenoord Bridge in mid-July 2025. The first contract includes, among other things, the replacement of the movable parts and civil works on the bridge.
Later this year, the tendering process will also follow for a party that will carry out the transport and installation of the two arches of the bridge.
After the cancellation of a previous tender, Rijkswaterstaat presented the renewed approach for the renovation of the busiest bridge in the Netherlands during a market consultation at the beginning of 2025. Adjustments have been made in this approach.
The project has been divided into four contracts to limit risks for market parties. Rijkswaterstaat will take on the role of integrator. An adjusted contract form, Cost+, has also been proposed, which is based on the actual costs incurred by the contractor to better manage risks.
Market Consultation Report
During the market consultation at the beginning of 2025, the renewed approach was explained, and subsequent discussions were held with various parties in which the market was asked for its response. This week, Rijkswaterstaat concluded the market consultation with the publication of the conversation report on TenderNed.
Tendering Schedule
In scheduling the start of the tendering process, Rijkswaterstaat has taken into account the wish of market parties to begin dialogue after the summer vacation of 2025. This is due to the required capacity and to allow extra time for forming combinations.
The selection phase for this first contract will take place in September, and at the end of September/beginning of October 2025, the dialogue phase for this tender will begin with a kickoff meeting. The expectation is that the work will be awarded before the summer of 2026. Interested market parties can participate in the tendering process for the first contract via TenderNed.
Execution Schedule for Renewing Van Brienenoord Bridge
According to the current schedule, the execution of the project will start in 2027, the movable part will be replaced in 2029, and a new west arch will be placed in 2030. Finally, the east arch will be replaced in 2032.
