At the end of January 2025, a webinar about sand hunger in the Oosterschelde was broadcast from the Abdijstudio in Middelburg. Did you miss it? No problem, the webinar has been recorded and can be watched again.
The webinar is an initiative of Rijkswaterstaat, Province of Zeeland, Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and Natuurmonumenten. During this online webinar, we will update you on the phenomenon of sand hunger, which causes sandbanks to become increasingly exposed.
We will also reflect on the sand supplementation of the Roggenplaat and look ahead to the supplementation of the Galgeplaat and Slikken van den Dortsman.
Rest Stop for Birds
In the winter of 2026/2027, we will begin raising the Slikken van den Dortsman and the 2nd largest sandbank in the Oosterschelde: the Galgeplaat. The goal is to keep the rest stop for birds like the oystercatcher, curlew, and bar-tailed godwit open in the future.
During the webinar, we will extensively discuss the final design for the upcoming supplementation. And we will hear which bird species benefit optimally from a fresh layer of sand on the banks.
