Rijkswaterstaat has awarded the contract for the variable maintenance of the mechanical components of the Haringvlietsluizen to SPIE Nederland. The contract was signed on Friday, April 11, 2025, during a festive gathering at the storm surge barrier in Stellendam.
Of the 3 bidders, SPIE Nederlands proposal was the one with the best price-quality ratio.
Ensuring Safety
Bob Demoet, chief engineer director (HID) PPO at Rijkswaterstaat: ‘To ensure safety in the coming decades, the Haringvlietsluizen will receive a significant mechanical boost over the next 3 years through the awarding of this contract to SPIE.’
Peter Paasse, director Smart City & Energies at SPIE Nederland: ‘We are proud to contribute to this important national monument and help build on the sustainable ambitions of Rijkswaterstaat. And most importantly: the surrounding area will be well protected against water from the sea thereafter.’
Maintenance of Haringvlietsluizen
The maintenance of the mechanical installations of the Haringvlietsluizen includes among other things:
- replacing all (hydraulic) oil of the cylinders that move the sluices of the storm surge barrier up and down, in the 36 machine rooms
- replacing seals, oil pots, and oil lines belonging to the hydraulic cylinders
- replacing the grease lubrication systems on the arms of the sluices
- inspecting and refurbishing the moving works of the salt and fish drains
- refurbishing the fish observation system in one of the fish drains
This maintenance project starts immediately and has a total duration of 3 years. Upon completion of the project, the installations of the storm surge barrier can last for years. This ensures that water discharge remains regulated and that the hinterland of the Haringvlietsluizen is protected against rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions in the future.
