The Temporary Subsidy Scheme for Transition to Circular Plastics Processing (SOPV) was only for plastic processors last year. This is different for the second opening: compounders can now also apply for a subsidy. Entrepreneurs and researchers can also test more often: they now receive a maximum of 2 subsidies for different tests. Applications can be submitted from April 8 at RVO.
Available for more entrepreneurs
Due to the change, the SOPV is now also interesting for compounders, besides processors. These entrepreneurs add fillers or other additives to polymers to give them specific properties. The product they make this way is called a compound. Processors (or converters) then turn these compounds into plastic semi-finished and finished products. The subsidy amount has more than doubled compared to the previous opening: from € 6 to € 13 million.
Subsidy for 2 tests
Entrepreneurs can test more often than last year. They receive a maximum of 2 SOPV subsidies for different tests this application round. The difference between both applications must be clear. The tests for which they apply for a subsidy, for example, concern different polymer types or different applications. Entrepreneurs receive a subsidy once for each test. They do not receive a subsidy again for a test from the previous application round.
Plastic from plant residues and algae
The SOPV encourages entrepreneurs to adapt their production process to make it more circular. They test whether part of the fossil plastic they use can be replaced by recycled or bio-based plastic. Recycled plastic comes from existing plastic streams. It is processed and used to make new raw materials. Bio-based plastic comes from natural materials, such as plant residues or algae.
Circular plastic standard
With a circular plastic standard, the government wants to encourage the replacement of fossil polymers (from petroleum, natural gas, and coal) with recyclate or bio-based polymers from 2027. This accelerates the transition to circular plastics. As a result, plastic processors face additional costs. With this subsidy, the government helps entrepreneurs reduce the costs for the transition to circular plastic.
