The NVWA has completed its research on Barkoo chew bones. The regulator conducted the research after dog owners reported that their dogs exhibited severe abnormal behavior or died after chewing on the bones. Based on this research, the NVWA found no contamination that could explain the neurological symptoms in the dogs. However, due to the large number of reports from dog owners both domestically and abroad regarding the chew bones in question, the safety warning issued on December 31, 2024, remains in effect as a precaution.
Chemical Substances
Several types of Barkoo chew bones mentioned in the safety warning have been tested for a wide range of chemical contaminants, heavy metals, and possible microbiological contamination. The NVWA found no contamination based on the research that could explain the neurological symptoms in the dogs. However, there are many different chemical substances that could cause the neurological symptoms. It is impractical to test the bones for all possible chemical substances. Therefore, the Dutch investigation into the bones has been concluded. Research is still ongoing regarding the tissue of a deceased dog in an attempt to determine which substance may have caused the abnormal behavior. The NVWA has shared its research findings with other EU member states where investigations into chew bones are also being conducted. Testing is also being carried out for other possible chemical contaminants.
Safety Warning Remains in Effect
Based on the large number of reports from dog owners both domestically and abroad, it remains important to avoid the bones mentioned in the safety warning as a precaution. The selling webshops have removed the chew bones from sale, informed customers, and blocked stocks.
