School competition for cleaner water: here is the winner
For the past four weeks, students from 10 primary schools in the Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel region have competed for cleaner water during the Water Race. They carried out a total of 195 water-saving actions and cleaned up litter nearly 1,000 times. In addition, they took many more steps to improve how we interact with nature and our drinking water. The Water Race Alliance Waterkracht has been a great success, with enthusiastic students, teachers, and local residents! KC De Stelberg primary school from Rotterdam won the Water Race with 2,150 points.
Our surface water is increasingly polluted by litter, making it harder to provide clean tap water. Litter is not the only issue—our behavior at home also affects water in nature. Climate change is causing extreme weather, such as heavy rainfall and droughts, leading to flooding and damage. The Water Race encourages children, their families, and local residents to use water more wisely and consciously. As always, the race began with an educational interactive guest lesson where children learned about water quality, extreme weather, and water usage.
After the guest lessons, the race began, and the students spent four weeks raising awareness about water in their surroundings. The children also campaigned in their neighborhoods to involve local residents in the Water Race. By cleaning up litter along rivers or ditches, removing tiles, or even installing a green roof, they contributed to a cleaner water network in the Netherlands.
The following primary schools participated in the Water Race over the past four weeks: De Provenier, KC De Stelberg, CBS De Regenboog, OBS West, De Horizon, Jozefschool, PCB De Horizon, Montessorischool De Kleine Prins, Charlois, and SBO Sonnevanck.
The Water Race Alliance Waterkracht is an initiative in collaboration with Alliantie Waterkracht, Fawaka Ondernemersschool, and Race Against Waste.
