Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland and Municipality of Zoetermeer Collaborate on Voorweg Project
On Thursday, March 12, the Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland and the Municipality of Zoetermeer signed a cooperation agreement. The agreement entails the joint improvement of a section of the Voorweg in Zoetermeer.
The section of the Voorweg to be improved is located in the western part of Zoetermeer, between Intratuin and the municipal border with Leidschendam. The project combines various works to minimize disruption to the surrounding area as much as possible.
Combining Efforts
The Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland will improve and raise a 1.2 km section of dike along the Voorweg, while the Municipality of Zoetermeer will enhance the road, thereby improving traffic safety. The Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland and the Municipality of Zoetermeer will carry out these works simultaneously, with Dunea and Stedin also conducting improvements during the same period. Although the works will cause some inconvenience, the collaboration ensures it will last no longer than strictly necessary.
Information Evening
In recent months, consultations have been held with residents, and an information evening was organized. The outcomes of these discussions are now being compiled and will be incorporated into the design as much as possible. The intention is to commence the works in the course of 2027.
Following the signing, Hoogheemraad Marjon Verkleij-Lemmers and Alderwoman Marijke van der Meer both expressed their confidence in a smooth collaboration. With the cooperation agreement, a new step has been taken toward the realization of the Voorweg project.
Marjon Verkleij-Lemmers: ‘Rijnland is continuously working on water safety in our region. We inspect our dikes and improve those that no longer meet the standards. This also applies to the dike along the Voorweg in Zoetermeer. It is no longer high or stable enough and will be reinforced. It’s great that we can tackle this project together with the municipality.’
Marijke van der Meer: ‘We have had excellent experiences working with the Hoogheemraadschap, such as with the Nieuwe Driemanspolder and the major water project "Ons Blauwe Goud," so it’s truly wonderful that we can also jointly address the Voorweg. It’s quite a challenge for residents, but with this approach, it will be completed in one go, and the Voorweg will be safe and well-maintained for a long time to come.’
