Information meeting in Beuningen and Winssen about the dike reinforcement project Zuidelijke Waaldijk Oost
Waterschap Rivierenland is organising information meetings on Wednesday, March 25, and Monday, March 30, 2026, about the start of the exploration phase of the dike reinforcement project Zuidelijke Waaldijk Oost (ZWO); dike section Weurt-Dreumel. Research shows that parts of this dike section do not meet the safety standards for 2050. This does not mean that the dike is unsafe now, but it does mean we need to look ahead. That is why the water authority is starting an exploration into how to bring this 35.5-kilometre-long dike section up to standard.
On Wednesday, March 25, the water authority will be at De Tinnegieter in Beuningen, and on Monday, March 30, at the Ontmoetingscentrum De Paulus in Winssen. Doors open at 7:15 PM, and the meeting starts at 7:30 PM with a plenary presentation. The water authority will then be happy to engage with stakeholders around discussion tables. Residents have been invited by letter. In recent weeks, the water authority has organised two other meetings along the 35-kilometre-long dike section. The meetings in Beuningen and Winssen are the last in this series. In May 2026, further meetings will be held in the form of thematic tables on project-wide topics. If you are interested in participating, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the website.
Zuidelijke Waaldijk – from Weurt to Dreumel
The full dike section starts on the west side of the Weurt lock, near the village of the same name. The dike briefly touches the municipal border of Nijmegen at the Van Heemstraweg and then runs through the rural area of the municipality of Beuningen, past the centres of Weurt, Beuningen, and Ewijk. After the underpass under the A50, the dike follows the route along Winssen and Deest. Given the length of the section, it has been divided into three manageable sections: Weurt - Deest, Deest - Boven-Leeuwen, and Boven-Leeuwen – Dreumel.
