Water a key priority for new municipal administrations

On Wednesday, March 18, municipal council elections will be held. The Amstel, Gooi and Vecht Water Board is urging new municipal administrations to prioritize water in their plans. Effective water management is essential for creating a pleasant place to live, work, and thrive—now and in the future.

Municipal decisions on water

Municipalities have significant influence over water management and stand to benefit greatly from it. The key considerations are ensuring sufficient water, clean water, and protection against flooding. The choices municipalities make can make a major difference. For example, where new homes are built: is there enough space to manage water during periods of heavy rain and drought?

The water board is responsible for water management, but this task is becoming increasingly challenging. Climate change, population growth in the same areas, and rising levels of pollutants in the water are all contributing factors. This makes close collaboration with municipalities even more critical.

Water and well-being in the municipality

Adequate and clean water is vital for people, animals, and plants in the municipality. Green spaces with sufficient and clean water help cool the environment on hot days. They also assist in capturing excess water during heavy rainfall. Additionally, dikes, pumping stations, and locks are indispensable for protecting residents from flooding. It is crucial that these systems are well-maintained and have adequate space.

Call to new municipal leaders
