Open meeting in Borkel en Schaft
On April 13, Waterschap De Dommel will host an open meeting about the Natura 2000 Dommeldal project. Residents and entrepreneurs from the southern rural area of Valkenswaard are welcome between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM at Dorpshuis d’n Teut in Borkel. This event is organized in collaboration with the Area-based Approach Grenscorridor.
Working on nature, water, and living environment
The Dommel flows through the southern rural area. The water authority is working to improve the nature along the stream and ensure clean and sufficient water. These measures may impact the surrounding area. Therefore, Waterschap De Dommel would like to hear how residents experience the current water situation and what concerns or ideas they have. This input will help in selecting measures that suit both nature and the living environment.
We invite residents to contribute their thoughts on topics such as:
- Culverts, ditches, weirs, pumps, and other water management measures
- Groundwater levels and areas where water accumulates
- (Water level-controlled) drainage systems.
We will also provide an update on the current status of the project and explain the next steps. Additionally, we will share how residents can get involved.
Natura 2000 objectives
The Dommeldal project aims to achieve the Natura 2000 objectives. This involves protecting and strengthening habitats for vulnerable plants and animals. At the same time, we are exploring opportunities to retain water longer, improve water quality, and expand natural areas. Special attention is also given to the position of farmers in the area. Balancing nature, water, and agriculture requires careful choices, and the knowledge of local residents is invaluable.
In December 2025, we also held a meeting in Elshouters ’t Heike. A meeting for the Malpie area is also planned.
Connection with the Grenscorridor area approach
During the meeting, information will also be available about Gebiedsgerichte aanpak Grenscorridor, a collaboration between governments, nature organizations, and the agricultural sector. They are working in the area to promote healthy soil, reduce nitrogen, and create an attractive landscape. The area plans of Grenscorridor and the work in the Dommeldal are aligned to ensure a cohesive approach. The area partners will also be present to answer questions and provide explanations.
