Statia delegation attends Brussels forum on climate finance
A delegation from Statia attended the forum Mobilising Blended Climate Finance for Bonaire, Statia, and Saba: From Policy to Practice on 19 March 2026 in Brussels to advance financing for the energy transition in Statia and the wider Caribbean Netherlands.
The delegation comprised Island Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam, Maldwyn Timber, Senior Policy Advisor, and Fred Cuvalay, Managing Director of the St. Eustatius Utility Company (STUCO).
The forum took place at the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the European Union and brought together European institutions, financing partners, and energy sector stakeholders to examine practical funding options, including grants, loans, and blended finance instruments.
Commissioner Leerdam delivered a keynote address during the opening segment of the programme, outlining Statia’s priorities in climate adaptation, energy security, and long term development.
“For the people of Statia, the energy transition is not a luxury it is a necessity for our future,” Commissioner Leerdam said.
The forum also featured contributions from the Commissioners of Bonaire and Saba, alongside representatives of the European Commission and financing institutions. Fred Cuvalay, Chief executive officer of STUCO, presented Statia’s energy transition priorities and contributed to the forum discussions.
Discussions focused on closing financing gaps and supporting projects that reduce dependence on imported fuel, strengthen energy security, and improve stability across the islands.
The government’s participation reflects its commitment to securing the partnerships and financing needed to support the energy transition and advance Statia’s longterm development.
