At the Stichtsekant industrial area in Almere, a special natural area is being created where the citys past literally lies beneath your feet. Thanks to a contribution of over 750,000 euros from the national Heritage Deal, the municipality is developing a new green space with water, walking, and cycling paths. Visitors will soon be able not only to enjoy fresh air but also to see how people lived here thousands of years ago.

Among the businesses at Stichtsekant are ancient campsites from the Stone Age. These are places where hunters, fishermen, and farmers once lived. This history is made visible in the landscape through natural elevations, wooden poles, and information boards. A highlight will be the reconstruction of an ancient fish trap: a clever fishing structure that was once actually used here.

“Almere has existed as a municipality for less than fifty years, but the history of this place goes back thousands of years,” says alderman Kees Ahles (Culture). “Soon you can walk here among trees and plants resembling those of that time and see how people lived off the water. The past thus literally finds a place in the landscape.”

What does this bring to Almere?

  • Living history: with reconstructions, signs, and routes that tell Almeres story.
  • Education and discovery: Almere schools receive teaching materials about the Stone Age, and children can visit the area.
  • New walking and cycling routes: for employees, residents, and visitors.
  • More greenery and water: helps against heat, retains rainwater, and increases biodiversity.

This is also good news for companies at Stichtsekant, says alderwoman Maaike Veeningen (Economy): “It will be a pleasant, green environment where people can take a walk or bike ride during their breaks. We connect existing paths and create new routes so employees and recreational visitors can explore the area. Stichtsekant will thus become not only a place to work but also to enjoy nature and tranquility.”

Construction starts later this year and continues until 2030. The municipality is working with various local and regional organizations. With the Heritage Deal, Almere shows that heritage is not just something from the past but an inspiration for a green and future-proof city.
