Oak processionary caterpillars have been found in various locations in Almere Haven. There are more of them this early in the year than in previous years. The affected trees are marked with red-white tape stating oak processionary caterpillar. Especially at Wittevrouwen in the Stichtse Kant industrial area, many caterpillars are on the trees. We have cordoned off the area and warning signs are posted. Do not enter this area, especially with dogs.
In the coming weeks, we will conduct checks on the trees with tape. We will do extra research at Wittevrouwen. When the nests here are fully grown, they will be vacuumed up. We will also search for nests in the ground. These will be treated with a biological agent: nematodes.
Research
On May 26, we began our inspection of oak trees in Almere Haven. We conduct this research every year throughout Almere and it lasts about 3 weeks. After Haven, we will continue the inspection in Almere Poort. Then Almere Stad will be next, and finally Almere Buiten.
