The tile of the year 2024 of the Walk of Fame Almere has been unveiled. The 51st tile of the tile route in Almere Centrum features the Cycling Companions Foundation Almere. This foundation makes cycling trips possible for people who can no longer cycle themselves due to physical or mental limitations. In 2024, the foundation reached a total of 40,075 kilometers cycled. This is the same distance as the circumference of the Earth.
The foundation organizes cycling trips where volunteers, also known as Cycling Companions, take people who cannot cycle themselves on a special tandem bike. This way, they can enjoy the outdoors, nature, and the city, as well as the social interaction that comes from cycling together.
“What the Cycling Companions Foundation does is actually very simple: going out together on a tandem bike. But the impact is great. Cycling here is a symbol of connection, of attention, and of celebrating life – every life, everyones life. It shows how powerful local involvement can be, and how we as a community can make each other stronger. That is why this foundation deserves a place in our story. A place on the Walk of Fame Almere. Because what they do is not just about 2024. Its about who we want to be as a city: a community that includes everyone, leaves no one behind, and allows space to enjoy together,” said Deputy Mayor Paul Tang.
Voting
With no less than 791 out of a total of 1,549 votes, the Cycling Companions Foundation Almere has been chosen by Almere residents as the winner of the Walk of Fame Almere tile for the year 2024. In second place is Almere Jungle. In 2024, the animal park at city estate De Kemphaan opened a brand new animal hospital and became even more accessible. Building De Voetnoot came in third. The cultural building was included in the monument register in 2024.
Gift from Rabobank
The Walk of Fame is a gift from Rabobank Almere to the municipality and the residents of Almere, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the city. Until 2043, Rabobank will donate a new tile each year. The tiles are laid like a ribbon through the center of Almere and tell the history of the city. More background information about the subject can be read via QR codes on the tiles.
