Alderman of Mobility Tyas Bijlholt will place the first sign on December 2, which will remain covered until January 30. He emphasizes the importance of this step: “By driving slower together, we make Amersfoort safer and more livable for everyone. Every resident, from young to old, should be able to move safely through the city. The street belongs to all of us.”

Safer

Traffic in Amersfoort is becoming busier and accidents are increasing. In 2024, of the 1150 traffic accidents, 6 were fatal and 179 resulted in injuries. The majority involved cyclists.

Other cities show that driving slower works. The number of accidents decreases and the chance of serious injuries also becomes much smaller. Therefore, Amersfoort is lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h on more streets. Currently, this applies to 69% of the streets in Amersfoort. From January 30, an additional 9% will be added. Additionally, on some roads, the speed limit will be reduced from 70 to 50 km/h and from 80 to 60 km/h.

30 km/h applies to all vehicles

The new speed limit applies from January 30, 2026, to all vehicles on the roadway, including (electric) bicycles and fatbikes on bike lanes. On bike paths, the maximum speed is 25 km/h. Police, ambulance, and fire services may drive faster in emergencies.
