Together they removed the temporary sticker from the first new 30 km/h sign. The temporary stickers on the new signs have informed road users since early December about the new speed limit. On the evening and night of January 29 to 30, a team from the contractor removed the remaining temporary stickers from over 800 traffic signs. From January 30, the new speed limit of 30 km/h applies there permanently.

30 km/h works

Other cities show that driving slower works. The number of accidents decreases and the chance of serious injuries is much smaller. It is expected that there will be 20 to 30 percent fewer accidents if everyone drives slower. The chance of a serious accident at 30 km/h is 3.5 times smaller than at 50 km/h. At 30 km/h the braking distance is half as long and you see more. Drivers thus have more time to process information and react to unexpected situations.

Safer

Child council member Nadus gladly helped remove the first sticker that Thursday evening: “For children it is very important that they can safely walk or cycle to school, sports or a friend.” Alderman for Mobility Tyas Bijlholt agrees and emphasizes that the campaign around the 30 km/h speed limit pays extra attention to the traffic safety of children and young people. “Last week I spoke about this with students from the MBO at Leusderweg. Also, all primary schools in Amersfoort received materials to pay attention to the new speed limit at school with the message: “Share the street with the children – The street belongs to all of us.”
