Preserving the Characteristic
The relocation will preserve the characteristic chestnut tree for the city, now on a brand new square. The (then young) tree was planted in 1950 and is estimated to be over 80 years old, with a height of 20 meters and a circumference measured at 282 cm. It has played an important role in the streetscape of Stationsplein for decades. Chestnut trees of this age and size are rarely relocated, making this operation exceptional.
Special Execution
The execution is also special. On Monday, the tree will be lifted from its current location using an 800-ton telescopic crane. The chestnut will then be temporarily placed on sturdy beams where it can rest. The following day, the final relocation will take place to the new location, 50 meters away.
Safety First
The transplantation is a major logistical and technical challenge. During the work, the safety of both the tree and travelers and passersby at Stationsplein is paramount. With this intervention, the municipality aims to combine the development of the station area with the preservation of valuable greenery and cultural heritage.
