Alderman Johnas van Lammeren emphasizes that investing in nature is important for the livability of the city. “A healthy city needs strong nature. Investing in more biodiversity ensures balance and a pleasant living environment for people and animals. With the quiet area in Park Schothorst, we consciously give space back to nature and thus to the future of our city.”
Contribution to nature in and around the city
Amersfoort is located in a special place where three landscapes meet: the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the Gelderse Vallei, and the open Eemland. The city forms a sort of fourth landscape. This location offers many opportunities for nature and animals. By improving habitats for characteristic plants and animals, other species and residents also benefit. Together with green volunteers and nature lovers, the municipality works on restoring nature in several places within the city.
What changes in the area?
The quiet area in Park Schothorst is being designed as a habitat for six animal species: hare, pine marten, badger, crested newt, black-veined white butterfly, and common blue butterfly. There will be more space for natural vegetation and better connections with other nature areas. Visitors remain welcome to experience nature via walking paths and information points along the edges of the area.
Planning
Research shows that hares live in the area. The hare is a protected species in the province of Utrecht. Therefore, work must not cause damage. Implementation is expected to start in autumn 2026, after the province has granted a permit. This way, nature in Park Schothorst gets the space it needs.
