During red or orange code, smoke lingers, causing air quality to deteriorate rapidly. During yellow code, burning is allowed, but only use clean, dry wood and be considerate of your neighbors. Since October 1, 2024, indoor wood burning during red or orange code is prohibited in Amersfoort for fireplaces and wood or pellet stoves. Outdoor burning, such as in a fire basket, is still allowed, but please be mindful of the surroundings.
Residents measure air quality
In the coming months, 20 residents will install sensors at their homes to measure air quality around wood burning. The municipality participates in a provincial project where TNO verifies the measurement data. This provides insight into what portion of fine particles comes from wood burning and the effect of the burning ban during red or orange code on air quality.
