On Wednesday, April 9, Amsterdam, together with the Pedestrian Association and the Childrens Council, will kick off the Year of the Pedestrian. With this year, we want to ensure that walking and pedestrians receive extra attention in Amsterdam.
Attention to Pedestrians
Especially now that the city is becoming increasingly busy, we must remain attentive to pedestrians and people with disabilities. Pedestrians take up the least space and do not need to park a vehicle in public space. This is ideal in a busy city. Together with interest groups, Amsterdammers, and entrepreneurs, the municipality will get to work. We will improve pedestrian safety, clear sidewalks, and encourage walking.
Taking Pedestrians into Account
Councilor Melanie van der Horst (Traffic and Public Space): “We need to take pedestrians more into account. We must look closely at what the road design and objects on the sidewalk have for effect on the space for pedestrians. But cyclists and motorists who temporarily park their bike or car on the sidewalk should also consider whether there is still enough space left. So that someone in a wheelchair or with a stroller can safely navigate the city, and children have space to play. With the Year of the Pedestrian, I want to ensure that there is lasting attention for this in the city.”
Activities
With various activities, we will draw extra attention to pedestrians over the coming year. The Childrens Council will start on April 9 with a series of meetings in which they will think about solutions to make the city more pedestrian-friendly. They will present their advice to the municipal council on June 26.
There will also be attention for beautiful city walks, and we will highlight walking through various actions. In several busy streets with crowded sidewalks, we will work with the neighborhood to think about how we can create more space. And we will consult with the elderly and people with disabilities on how we can make the streets more accessible for them.
