The iconic bicycle flat at Amsterdam Central is disappearing. Amsterdam, together with Schiphol, explored whether the bicycle flat could have a new destination at the airport. However, this proved not to be feasible.
The bicycle flat has been closed since January 2023. Around Amsterdam Central, two large underground bicycle parking facilities have opened in recent years. Together with the existing facilities, there is now space for more than 14,000 bicycles. Therefore, the old bicycle flat is no longer needed.
Second Chance
Amsterdam and Schiphol investigated whether the flat could have a second life at the airport. The bicycle flat would make traveling to Schiphol by bike easier. However, that plan turned out to be too complicated and too expensive. Therefore, the move will not take place.
Circular Demolition
Instead, the bicycle flat will be demolished in a sustainable manner. The metal structure, which can still last at least 50 years, will be reused. This way, the material will get a second life elsewhere.
Dock
In place of the bicycle flat, trees and benches will be placed by the water. We are investigating whether and how we can create a dock here. This will make the place even more accessible.
Farewell to an Icon
Whether you liked it or not, the bicycle flat was a real eye-catcher. By the end of this year, it will disappear permanently from the street scene.
