The entire month is dedicated to Pride in Amsterdam. With a varied program, there is attention for equal rights, visibility, and safety of the LGBTQ+ community.
From July 3rd to August 3rd, there will be exhibitions, sports days, discussions, parties, and other gatherings throughout the city.
Why a whole month?
Amsterdam Pride used to last 1 or 2 weeks. In collaboration with organizations for and by LGBTQ+ individuals, the program is now 4 weeks long. This allows for more diverse initiatives: from neighborhood projects and substantive discussions to large cultural events and public celebrations.
Remembrance and Awareness
The start date, July 3rd, was intentionally chosen. It refers to the Stonewall riots in New York in 1969: a revolt against police violence and discrimination, and the beginning of the global LGBTQ+ rights movement. Pride is therefore not only a celebration but also a moment of remembrance and awareness. This is urgently needed as the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals are increasingly under pressure worldwide.
What is there to do?
Activities will take place in all districts. Amsterdam supports about 30 organizations that contribute to the program. They organize various events. Here are a few examples:
Pride Art Route
Discover the work of LGBTQ+ artists at dozens of locations in Amsterdam, such as museums, galleries, and cafes. The art addresses themes such as identity, freedom, and visibility. With an online map or paper route description, you can follow the route at your convenience.
Saturday, July 5th: Queer Sport Social in Westerpark
A sporty and accessible day focused on meeting others. You can participate in various activities suitable for all levels. Even if you dont play sports, you are welcome to come and watch or meet others. Participation is free.
From July 18th to August 4th: Zero Flags Project at Museumplein
At Museumplein, 63 flags with a black mourning pennant are displayed. They refer to countries where sexual orientations or gender expressions that do not conform to the norm are still punishable. This installation raises awareness for human rights and global inequality.
From July 31st to August 3rd: Pride Square at Dam
The largest open-air stage of Pride, featuring performances, speakers, and information booths. The program focuses on visibility, meeting, and current social issues. Admission is free.
From July 31st to August 3rd: Pride Village in Reguliersdwarsstraat
In this street, there will be small-scale performances, cultural activities, and food and drink options for 4 days. No registration is required; you can just walk in.
Closing Weekend with Boat Parade
The closing weekend, from Thursday, July 31st to Sunday, August 3rd, is the most famous part of Amsterdam Pride. On Saturday, August 2nd, the annual boat parade will sail through the canals. Additionally, there will be street parties, outdoor performances, and gatherings throughout the city. Many activities are free.
