Summer brings extra liveliness to Amsterdam. Major events like Sail and Pride attract tens of thousands of visitors. And in nice weather, many Amsterdammers head outdoors. Its nice, of course, but it also leads to more waste. Thats why we are taking additional measures to keep the city tidy and livable.
This is what we do to keep busy locations clean:
- In June and July, we are placing 30 extra temporary above-ground containers in the center to reduce the number of waste bags on the streets. These containers are an addition to the extra above-ground containers we placed last year.
- There will be extra roll containers and waste pyramids at popular spots. Some waste pyramids have a separate slot for pizza boxes.
- At 40 recreation spots, there are special bins for deposit bottles and cans.
- We empty existing bins more frequently from May to September.
Quick Cleanup Actions with the Train
Last year we started with the train. In neighborhoods where waste is still collected in bags, a cleanup crew follows directly after collection. This prevents litter from being left behind. We now apply this throughout the year.
Campaigns and Waste Coaches on Site
At 57 busy recreation spots, such as large parks, city beaches, and popular quays, there are extra bins. Additionally, waste coaches engage with visitors and encourage posters, banners, and social media messages to dispose of waste properly. Is a bin full? Just walk to the next one.
Keeping It Clean Together
“Amsterdam is looking forward to a festive summer with beautiful events like Pride and Sail. This leads to more busyness than in a normal summer. With extra effort, we want to prevent this from causing nuisance,” says Alderman Hester van Buren (Waste and Cleaning).
She continues: “For this, I also ask for the cooperation of residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs. The waste behavior of residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs remains an important factor in combating nuisance. Only if everyone is conscious of waste will we truly keep the city clean.”
