Tip for the weekend or summer vacation: take a walk through Amsterdam-Zuid, which is an open-air museum until September 21. Along a route of about 5 kilometers, no less than 70 sculptures are on display. The exhibition is dedicated to Amsterdams 750 years and celebrates the citys freedom and tolerance.
You will walk along the Apollolaan, Minervalaan, and Churchilllaan. The starting point is the information pavilion at Minervalaan 1, which is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Here you can pick up route maps and the catalog. And join free guided tours on weekends at 1:00 PM. You can download the audio tour at artzuid.nl.
A lot of art in the area
Amsterdam-Zuid is a showcase of early 20th-century urban architecture designed by Berlage. With wide avenues and a symmetrical layout with park-like spaces. Every two years, the ARTZUID exhibition is held here. But there are also many permanent sculptures in the area. Think of classic-modern works at the Hilton, the George Gershwinplein with artistic design, and street art at construction projects, such as on Maurice Ravellaan.
