How do we make Amsterdam greener while the city continues to grow? This question is central to the Citizens Assembly Green City. In early April, 10,000 Amsterdammers and Weespers will receive an invitation. Will you be there? Sign up and discuss the future of greenery in our city.
Amsterdam is growing: more homes, facilities, and playgrounds are being added. At the same time, we want to make the city greener. But that requires choices. Think about questions such as:
- Where will the greenery come?
- Who is it intended for?
- If we choose greenery, what will we not choose?
- And when will we be satisfied?
These questions directly affect your living environment. That is why it is important that you can think along.
Why a citizens assembly?
In 2023, Amsterdammers and Weespers voted against the new policy for the Main Green Structure in a referendum. Therefore, the municipal council decided to organize a citizens assembly: a new way to truly involve residents in thinking and deciding. The citizens assembly investigates how a growing city can also remain a green and livable city.
A citizens assembly is a group of randomly selected residents who together investigate an important issue and advise the municipality on it.
How does it work?
Of the 10,000 invitees, anyone can register. After that, a lottery is held. This creates a diverse group of 100 to 150 participants: young and old, from all corners of the city, with different backgrounds and educational levels. You do not need any special knowledge. A mix of different people makes a citizens assembly a powerful tool.
Between the end of May and the end of September 2025, the citizens assembly will meet 6 times to work together on advice for the municipality. Advice that is legally, financially, and practically feasible will be implemented by the municipality. The independent foundation Team Citizens Assembly will facilitate the meetings. They ensure a citizens assembly where everyone can participate in a pleasant way.
Participating makes a difference
“A citizens assembly is educational and inspiring,” says Ernst Abbing of Team Citizens Assembly. “You get to know the city and each other better. And you really work on solutions that make a difference.”
Did not receive an invitation? You can still participate
On the page Citizens Assembly Green City you can read more about the citizens assembly and its further progress. Soon you will also find an online survey there. With it, you can share your ideas and wishes about greenery in a growing city. The citizens assembly will take incoming responses into account in the research.
