On the night of January 1, 2026, there was a large fire in the Vondelkerk in the West district. The fire caused significant damage to this special building, which is important to many Amsterdam residents.

Residents of houses around the Vondelkerk had to temporarily leave their homes. Power was cut off in 90 homes. Fortunately, no one was injured. All residents have since returned and power has been restored.

Investigation into the Cause

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Police and fire services are investigating.

Accessibility and Safety

The immediate area around the Vondelkerk is partially cordoned off for safety. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the normal routes. There are no detours. There is no health risk, for example from asbestos. Experts are closely monitoring the situation.

Residents Evening

The municipality is organizing a residents evening on Tuesday, January 6. This evening is intended for people living near the Vondelkerk. The municipality, fire brigade, police, Stadsherstel, and Monument Care will explain what happened and what will happen next. There is also room for questions. The residents evening is only for direct neighbors. They have received a personal invitation.

Future of the Vondelkerk

The famous architect Pierre Cuypers, known for the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, called the Vondelkerk his dearest design. He designed not only the church but also the surrounding houses. Together they form a unique whole. Cuypers lived nearby and regularly visited his church.

The fire destroyed the church roof, but the walls remain. The basement, where the complete archive of all monumental buildings of Stadsherstel is kept, was fortunately not damaged. Stadsherstel Amsterdam wants to restore the Vondelkerk. This will take a lot of time.

Fundraising campaigns have started for the rebuilding of the church. More information can be found at Help rebuild the Notre-Dame of Amsterdam - Stadsherstel Amsterdam.
