Mopeds, such as the Biro, the Topolino, and the Opel Rocks-e, are not allowed on the ferries in Amsterdam. Only vehicles for people with disabilities are welcome. “It is irresponsible to let such large vehicles drive among all those cyclists and pedestrians.”

Mopeds are motor vehicles and therefore belong on the roadway, not on the bike path or sidewalk. Aids specifically intended for people with disabilities are allowed to do so. Because those vehicles often resemble mopeds, it sometimes leads to confusion.

Around the ferries, this increasingly causes problems. The bike and footpaths are becoming busier, and mopeds pose a danger to cyclists and pedestrians. Also, on the ferry itself, space is limited, causing mopeds to create additional congestion.

Campaign and enforcement

Together with GVB, we will launch a campaign this fall to inform moped riders about the rules. After that, enforcement actions will follow.

Councilor Melanie van der Horst emphasizes why mopeds are not allowed on the ferry: “The ferries and ferry landings are becoming increasingly crowded with pedestrians and cyclists. I find it irresponsible to let such large vehicles drive among all those cyclists and pedestrians, where children and dogs are also present. I do not want to wait until something goes wrong. Especially since they are already not allowed to drive there according to the law. I understand that it is disappointing for some moped riders that they have to take a detour. Therefore, we take the time to inform everyone so that people can see which route is most convenient or can choose another vehicle.”

Alternative routes

Moped users can take a detour via:

  • the Hempont (cars are allowed here)
  • Amsterdamse- and the Schellingwoudebrug

Applies to the whole city

The rule that mopeds are not allowed on the bike path or sidewalk applies throughout the city. We will investigate in the coming time whether additional measures are needed in other places.
