More and more civil servants of the Municipality of Amsterdam are working with ChatAmsterdam. Since May 2025, an average of 2,900 employees ask a total of 90,000 questions each month to this internal AI assistant.

ChatAmsterdam is a digital assistant developed internally for civil servants. The system helps with daily tasks, such as writing texts and summarizing information.

Maintaining Control

According to Alderman Alexander Scholtes, responsible for digitization and ICT, carefulness is important: “AI can help civil servants do their work better. At the same time, as a government, we have the responsibility to use it wisely. With ChatAmsterdam, we maintain control over our documents and data ourselves. This way, sensitive information stays within the organization.”

Data entered by civil servants remains within the municipalitys systems and is not used by commercial parties. This reduces the risk of data leaks and misuse of sensitive information.

Use Within the Organization

Currently, 7,650 employees are registered for ChatAmsterdam. Approximately 2,800 actively use the digital assistant. About 1,000 civil servants use it more than 2 days a week. This number grows every month by 10 to 15 percent.

Faster

Civil servants use ChatAmsterdam, among other things, to create texts faster, summarize information clearly, and better understand difficult documents. This gives them more time for other work, such as personal contact with residents. Employees can also take training on responsible use of digital tools.

Assessment

We continue to improve ChatAmsterdam and investigate which digital systems are safe and suitable for government use. For this, we use our own assessment framework. We look at reliability, energy consumption, and transparency about costs and data origin. The results of these assessments are publicly available.

Knowledge Sharing

The knowledge gained is shared with other municipalities. This contributes to a safe and responsible use of digital technology by governments and other public organizations.
