The demonstration that was scheduled for Sunday, October 12, on the Dam is being moved to Museumplein. Mayor Halsema made this decision together with the police chief and the chief public prosecutor to ensure safety and public order.

The demonstration starts at Museumplein and also ends there, after a parade. Around the square and along the route, a safety risk area will be in effect on Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00. The police can search everyone there.

Crowds in the city

The move is related to the crowds in the city. On the same day, the Dutch national team plays in the Johan Cruyff ArenA, with supporters in the city center and on the Dam. There is also a chance of counter-demonstrations and possible disturbances. This makes the Dam a too risky location that day.

3,000 demonstrations annually

In Amsterdam, there are more than 3,000 demonstrations annually, more than half of which take place on the Dam. The risk of nuisance, disturbances, and mixing with shopping crowds is high. In recent months, the pressure on this location has increased so much that the authorities are more frequently designating other locations for demonstrations to proceed safely.

Fundamental right

Demonstrating is a fundamental right. Therefore, the mayor only imposes rules if there are risks to public order, traffic safety, or health. The mayor follows the Public Manifestations Act.
