Amsterdam will get a new bridge over the IJ: the Oostbrug. We will investigate the effect of this bridge on the surroundings and shipping. You can respond to the research design. Share your opinion from January 22 to March 4, 2026.
The Oostbrug will be a new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians between the Hamerkwartier in Noord and the Azartplein in Oost. We expect 20,000 to 25,000 people to cross the bridge daily.
Reorganization of the water
The IJ is an important shipping route to and from the ports of Amsterdam. With the arrival of the bridge, the situation on the water near the bridge will also change. For example, there must be enough space for ships to wait when the bridge is open or to stay overnight. Therefore, we also look at the layout of the water around the bridge: the Eastern Binnen-IJ.
What can you respond to?
You can respond to the Scope and Level of Detail Note (NRD) Oostbrug and nautical reorganization of the Eastern Binnen-IJ. But what is that? The NRD is a document that states what we will investigate for the project and how we will do that. This helps to make good choices for the project. The NRD covers topics such as traffic, noise, shipping, air quality, nature, and how the project affects the neighborhood. We also look at different solutions. Your response can influence the topics being researched. It is not yet about decisions, but about the research design. Your opinion helps to improve the research.
The results of the research will eventually be included in an Environmental Impact Report, which will be used as a basis to amend the environmental plan.
How to respond
More than 14,000 households in Noord and Oost received a leaflet about the consultation. You can respond from January 22 to March 4, 2026:
- online via https://www.amsterdam.nl/oostbrug
- on paper at the city counters in Noord and Oost
Attend an information evening
Would you like to know more or ask questions to the project team? Then come to an information meeting. Register by January 26 at the latest.
- In Noord on Wednesday evening, January 28 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
- In Oost on Thursday evening, January 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
What happens with your response
We review all responses and provide answers everywhere: what we do and do not take over. These answers will be included in a report, called a Response Note. This note goes to the city council so they can adopt the Scope and Level of Detail Note. The expectation is that the Response Note and the Scope and Level of Detail Note will be available around summer in the Oostbrug participation dossier on Open Amsterdam.
Alderman Van der Horst: ‘Involving residents and entrepreneurs from the neighborhood
Alderman Melanie van der Horst (Traffic and Transport): “We have already received a lot of valuable input from experts, residents, entrepreneurs, and skippers who previously signed up for a conversation. However, this project has a major impact on land and water. That is why I also want other stakeholders to be able to participate. For skippers, it can be important that we include in our research the effect of our plans on water flow and nautical safety. For residents and entrepreneurs, it can be valuable to see how best to deal with topics such as noise, light, safety, and the increase in bicycle traffic in their neighborhood. I am happy to listen here so that we can ultimately come to a careful balancing of interests.”
