On Saturday, March 29, there will be no trains to, from, and via Amsterdam Central. The train station will be closed all day due to large-scale work by ProRail. Also, on Sunday, March 30, and Monday, March 31, very limited train traffic will be possible. Please account for extra travel time.
Amsterdam Central is being renovated to accommodate more passengers in the future. Currently, about 200,000 people get on and off daily, but by 2030 that number is likely to be 275,000.
What will happen?
To accommodate the large number of passengers, the platforms need to be wider and longer, and the station will have a new underground bicycle parking. Worn-out railway bridges will also be replaced, and the track layout will be adjusted so that trains can run more smoothly. The work will ultimately make the station safer, more spacious, and more efficient.
What does this mean for you?
- On Saturday, March 29, there will be no trains to, from, and via Amsterdam Central.
- On Sunday, March 30, and Monday, March 31, there will be very limited train traffic.
- Detours via other stations (such as Sloterdijk and Amstel) will be busy.
Travel as much as possible outside of peak hours and check your route in advance, for example via the NS journey planner or 9292.nl. The closure only applies to trains. Trams and buses will still operate to, from, and via Amsterdam Central.
Closures are rare
For ProRail, it is a major challenge to work at a station with limited space and many passengers coming every day. A closure like Saturday is rare. The limited train traffic on Sunday and Monday is also.
Adjusted timetable for Muiderpoort and Weesp
During the period until April 23, an adjusted timetable will apply towards Muiderpoort and Weesp station. Please take this into account.
