From July 2027 to November 2028, work will be carried out in the IJ Tunnel. The tunnel will be closed for this period. We understand this is a long time for people who use the tunnel. Therefore, we want to prepare well. You can help us with this. If we know how often and when you drive through the IJ Tunnel and whether you could travel in another way, we can take this into account better. Please fill in the questionnaire.
From the summer of 2027, the IJ Tunnel will be closed for at least a year for all traffic. We want to know what the closure means for travelers. For this, we have set up a short survey. With the answers, we can take better measures during the work.
What will we do?
The IJ Tunnel will undergo major replacement maintenance. We will renew many old technical systems, such as ventilation and lighting. We will also replace the asphalt. In addition, we will connect the IJ Tunnel to the central control system of the new traffic control center. The maintenance is necessary to keep the IJ Tunnel safe and reliable. After the work, the tunnel will be easier to operate and maintain.
What does this mean for travelers?
The work will take place between July 1, 2027, and November 1, 2028. We expect the work to last at least a year. During the work, the tunnel will be closed in both directions for all traffic, including public transport. This will have major consequences for accessibility in and around Amsterdam.
What do we want to know from you?
We are curious how often and when people drive through the tunnel. And whether they do this, for example, for work, a family visit, or shopping. We are also curious whether travelers can travel differently if the tunnel is closed for a long time. For example, by public transport or bicycle.
Survey results
We use the survey results to better prepare the closure period. This way, we can better meet the needs of travelers and develop good travel options. And we ensure that the roads in and around Amsterdam remain as accessible as possible and that there is space for people who have no alternative to traveling by car.
