The time of the Christmas tree, as beautiful as it was, is coming to an end. One day you think: done, get rid of it! What should you do to give your tree a useful end?

First, completely empty the tree. Remove the pot, decorations, hooks, and lights. Then bring the tree between December 29 and January 18 to one of the more than 2,300 drop-off locations in Amsterdam and Weesp. From there, we will reuse your tree for compost and energy.

Drop-off locations

You can recognize the drop-off locations by a sign. There are many throughout the city, so also near you. Where exactly? Check Christmas tree drop-off. If you live in the Centrum district and there is no drop-off location nearby, place your tree next to the garbage bags.

What happens to your tree?

We bring the Christmas tree to a green processor. They make compost from the branches and needles (about 70 percent of the tree). We use this compost for Amsterdam parks, public gardens, and verges. The trunk (the remaining 30 percent) is used for biomass to generate energy for the Amsterdam district heating network.

Artificial Christmas trees

Sometimes artificial Christmas trees end up at the drop-off locations for real Christmas trees. They do not belong there. Take the tree to a thrift store or a Recycle point near you or place it at the bulky waste spot on the bulky waste collection day. Check the Waste guide for the correct drop-off time and collection day.

Want to dispose of your Christmas tree later?

If you want to dispose of your Christmas tree after January 18, bring it for free to a Recycle point.
