Between February 9 and 16, the Amsterdam newspaper will be delivered to your mailbox. Have you not received the newspaper by Tuesday, February 17? Let us know, and you will receive it afterwards. What can you read in this newspaper?
Every February, around Valentines Day, love is extensively celebrated. Lovers give each other attention and gifts. But love can of course be celebrated much more broadly. Love for friends, acquaintances, or the city.
Mother tongue
Love in the city is also for the mother tongue of Amsterdammers. February 21 is International Mother Language Day. Many different languages are spoken in Amsterdam. On page 4, Amsterdammers and Weesp residents talk about their connection with their mother tongue.
Breeding season
The Amsterdam birds also have love on their minds. Next month the breeding season begins. You can encounter breeding birds all over the city. On pages 8 and 9, you can read which birds nest in the city. City ecologist Els Corporaal explains how you can best help breeding birds.

The teacher shortage in Amsterdam has further decreased? In primary education, the shortage dropped from 15.5 percent in 2024 to 12.2 percent in 2025. The shortage in secondary education dropped from 6.5 percent to 3.5 percent. The shortage decreased partly because school boards now hire far fewer self-employed workers (freelancers) in primary schools.
