Children are not yet allowed to vote. But they do have good ideas to make Amsterdam more beautiful, better, and cleaner. That is why Amsterdam has a childrens council. It consists of 16 children, 2 from each district and the Weesp city area. The childrens council meets every month. Afterwards, they pass their advice on to the city council. This way, they give the children of Amsterdam a voice.

Adult residents also naturally have ideas about how things can be improved or done differently. In a citizens assembly, about 100 Amsterdammers and Weesp residents thought about how the municipality can become greener. They gave 16 recommendations, including covering the A10 highway to create space for greenery.

Do you already have an emergency kit?

The municipality and emergency services are preparing for a situation where there is no electricity for 72 hours and ask you to prepare as well. If the power goes out, emergency services have a lot to do, says Renske Giesen from Fire Department Amsterdam-Amstelland: “There will be more help needed than we can provide. On the first day, for example, we are busy supporting the ambulance to bring people to hospitals who use medical equipment at home. Or we rescue people from elevators. Therefore, most residents are initially on their own. It is important to be prepared, for example by having an emergency kit at home.”

Did you know...

Residents give their neighborhood an average score of 7.5? Two-thirds of Amsterdammers and Weesp residents see themselves as happy people. That is one of the findings of The State of the City. This is a large study on the living conditions of residents. The Research and Statistics department (O&S) of the municipality conducts this study every 2 years.
