There have been new reports of measles. GGD Amsterdam has initiated a source and contact investigation and is in touch with families and those involved. If your child shows symptoms related to measles or if you are concerned, please contact your doctor or GGD by phone.
What is measles?
Measles is a highly contagious rash disease caused by the measles virus. The disease begins suddenly with symptoms such as fever, inflamed eyes, and a cold. After 3 to 7 days, spots appear on the skin. They start behind the ears and then spread across the body.
Risks of measles
Some people are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill from measles. Particularly unvaccinated young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immunity are at risk of becoming seriously ill.
Traveling Abroad
If you are traveling with your child to a country where measles is common, the chance of your child contracting measles increases if they are not vaccinated. Therefore, it is advised to vaccinate children starting at 6 months early. The MMR vaccination is free.
Make an appointment with Youth Health Care (JGZ) of GGD Amsterdam for an early vaccination. Call: 020-5555961
If you already have an appointment for your child for other travel vaccinations, the measles vaccination can also be given during this appointment.
Protection through vaccination
The MMR vaccination protects your child against mumps, measles, and rubella. The vaccination consists of 2 shots: the first when your child is 14 months old and the second when your child is 3 years old. This way, your child is well protected against these diseases.
Missed shots or questions?
If your child has missed one or more shots from the National Vaccination Program, you can catch up on these shots at the walk-in consultation of Youth Health Care (JGZ) of GGD Amsterdam. You are also welcome if you have questions or need additional explanations.
