Since the introduction of a deposit on cans and bottles, there has been a lot of litter in the city. People break open trash bins or leave them open in their quest for deposits. We are trying to reduce the nuisance in various ways. We are now also tackling the most polluted areas in the city in a new way. A way you probably dont expect.
Amsterdam is constantly looking at what can be improved or changed. For some problems, creative solutions are needed. Fewer trash bins, however illogical it may sound, is part of the solution to litter on the streets in many places in the city.
From Solution to Cause
There are about 12,000 trash bins in Amsterdam. In busy areas, we empty these several times a day. Before the introduction of the deposit, we placed trash bins to prevent litter. However, because the bins are left open and waste falls out onto the streets, they now often cause litter.
Removing Trash Bins
Sometimes it is better to remove a trash bin. For example, in busy shopping streets where there are already bins provided by businesses selling food and drinks, or bins that are unnecessary because there is an underground container nearby. We are already experimenting with removing trash bins in various places. The first results from shopping streets like Nieuwendijk and Damstraat, and parks including Noorderpark and Martin Luther Kingpark, are promising. There is less litter, and it looks cleaner.
Larger Trash Bins
Additionally, we are replacing the standard 100-liter trash bins throughout the city with bins that are twice as large. We are carefully considering what is needed in the area. For instance, two small bins can be replaced by one large one. And we are moving from two locations where waste tends to accumulate to one.
A New Trash Bin for Amsterdam?
We have already adjusted our standard trash bin in various ways to reduce nuisance. From different locks and magnetic closures to springs that ensure the bin closes again, to elastic bands around the bin and donation rings. However, it is not enough. Therefore, we are looking for a different bin that better fits the current problems. We are incorporating the knowledge and experience of the staff in this process and collaborating with Verpact and the districts.
Short Term
In the coming six months, cleaning staff will go out to implement tailored solutions in the most polluted areas of the city center.
