Living, working, learning, and relaxing: it should all be possible in Nieuwe Meer Oost, a planned new urban neighborhood in the Schinkelkwartier. The plans are ready. What do you think? You can respond from July 17 to September 10.
Nieuwe Meer Oost will be a green, vibrant urban neighborhood in the Schinkelkwartier, on the west side of the city. Development will take place step by step over the coming years.
2,600 Homes, Businesses, and Amenities
According to the plan, there will be:
- space for 2,600 homes, in all price ranges (from social rent to free sector);
- space for businesses and offices;
- amenities such as a primary school, shops, restaurants, and a community square.
Some of the homes are specifically intended for residents from Nieuw-West.
Sustainable Urban Neighborhood
Nieuwe Meer Oost is part of the larger Schinkelkwartier, which will transform from a work location to a complete, sustainable urban neighborhood over the next 25 years. There is a strong focus on greenery, water, and accessibility.
Contributing to a Mixed, Accessible City
There is a great need for new homes and working space in Amsterdam. With Nieuwe Meer Oost, the municipality aims to contribute to a mixed, accessible city where different residents and functions come together.
Plan
In the draft investment note, the municipality explains how the neighborhood can be developed step by step. The plan includes:
- how the neighborhood should look (the urban design);
- what will be included in the public space (such as streets, squares, and greenery);
- the costs and how they will be funded (the financial justification).
Based on this note, the municipality will open a land exploitation: a financial plan outlining the costs of developing the neighborhood and how those costs will be recouped. This allows the municipality to invest purposefully in the development of Nieuwe Meer Oost.
Alderman: Space for Everyone
Alderman Steven van Weyenberg (Housing and Urban Development): “Nieuwe Meer Oost shows how we are building the city of the future: mixed, green, and with space for everyone. Amsterdam is developing a new piece of the city for much-needed homes and invites residents and stakeholders to think along with us about the further elaboration of this neighborhood.”
Note: this is still a draft plan. Implementation will take place in phases and may change based on feedback and new insights.
Respond to the Plans
Residents, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders can respond to the plans from July 17 to September 10, 2025.
On Tuesday, August 26, we will organize an information meeting. The plans will be explained there, you can ask questions, and you will hear how previous input from residents has been incorporated.
More information and all draft documents will be available from July 17 at Nieuwe Meer Oost: a place for innovation.
