Did you know that an evening of wood burning in a stove emits as much fine dust as a 1,000-kilometer car ride? A wood stove may seem cozy, but it is one of the biggest causes of lung complaints and can also cause other health problems. That is why we are introducing new measures to reduce the nuisance from wood burning. These have been further tightened based on the feedback from 531 Amsterdammers and advice from the districts.
Wood burning causes a lot of emissions of fine dust, soot, and other harmful substances. These substances can lead to health complaints. Think of shortness of breath, headaches, and sleep problems. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of serious conditions such as asthma and cardiovascular diseases. Especially children, the elderly, and people with existing health problems are at risk. Research shows that 42 percent of Amsterdammers experience nuisance from wood smoke.
No Ban, But Measures
We choose a step-by-step approach. There will be no ban on wood burning for the time being, but we do want to raise awareness among residents about the dangers and risks of wood burning. We will do the following:
- We will better inform residents about the health risks of wood burning, both for the burner themselves and for neighbors.
- We will explore the possibility of electric barbecuing in parks, green spaces, and forests. We will do this together with the districts.
- At recreation areas for children, we will work with the managers to investigate whether there are healthier alternatives to burning fires.
- We will investigate whether a burning ban in homes is possible, both for existing buildings and for new construction.
- In neighborhoods with a lot of nuisance, we will talk to residents to find solutions together.
Most measures will be implemented starting in 2026. We will evaluate in 2027.
Subsidy for Removing Chimneys
You can already apply for a subsidy for removing or sustainably decommissioning a chimney connected to a wood stove, pellet stove, or open fireplace. This aims to reduce emissions from wood burning.
