Tenants of large social rental homes can now move more easily to a home that better suits their situation. With the new Passend Wonen scheme, more people will receive moving cost compensation and more help in finding a suitable home.
Starting July 1, housing corporations can help more tenants through the existing scheme From Big to Better. The scheme applies to households of up to 3 persons leaving a social rental home of more than 70 m² and with at least 4 rooms. For those who really cannot find a suitable home on their own, corporations may in some cases make a direct housing offer.
Good to know: the base rent of the new home will be adjusted by almost all housing corporations if necessary, and is usually not higher than the current base rent.
New Moving Cost Compensation
If you move from a large social rental home to a smaller social rental home in Amsterdam, you may already be entitled to moving cost compensation through From Big to Better. Starting July 1, the options have been expanded with the Passend Wonen scheme.
You can now also receive moving cost compensation if you move:
- to another type of social rental home from a corporation in Amsterdam (such as a living group or informal care home)
- to a social rental home from a corporation outside Amsterdam
- to a private social rental home, mid-rental home, or owner-occupied home
- to live together
This makes moving just a little easier for some people. At the same time, homes become available for others who urgently need a larger home.
Note: always contact your corporation first to check if your home meets the requirements before you terminate your lease.

A Suitable Home for Everyone
Many people live in a home that does not fit their situation. The home is too small, too large, or too expensive. Due to the shortage of homes, moving is often not possible. Removing Barriers
The municipality and the housing corporations are taking measures together to improve the flow of tenants. Corporations are better aligning their rules and removing barriers to housing exchanges. We are also exploring whether we can relax the area requirements for the From Big to Better scheme. For example, a home of slightly less than 70 m² could also participate. Additionally, we as a municipality are expanding personal guidance and tailored support, also for households in the mid-rental and owner-occupied sectors.
