Happy New Year, Amsterdammers and friends of the city!
I have received many New Year wishes, often very original. Thank you for that! Many wished me strength, which I found special. We give ourselves and each other a new chance in the new year. Despite last years challenges, I hope you have experienced personal happiness.
Our city struggles with housing shortages and growing poverty, especially in areas like Nieuw-West, Zuidoost, and Noord. Young people feel uncertain about their future and opportunities.
Sadly, violence and discrimination against minorities in Amsterdam have increased. In 2024, we dealt with the war in Israel and Palestine, leading to division within our community.
There was much sorrow for the suffering worldwide, from Ukraine to Syria. Politics is not my arena, but I emphasize the importance of our democratic rule of law and the protection of freedoms for all.
Despite the challenges, we have also seen beautiful moments. Amsterdam is a place for growth, innovation, and collaboration, with many entrepreneurs working towards a better future.
We also witnessed resident groups protesting rightly and raising awareness of important issues. Creativity and art played a significant role over the past year.
For me, it was a year of young people seeking connections, even if that was sometimes difficult. They fought against antisemitism and hatred and sought dialogue with one another.
This year we celebrate the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam. Let us mark this with pride and celebrate our shared history.
My hope is that the voices of wise and brave Amsterdammers are stronger than those of hatred and division. Let’s not be afraid and keep meeting each other, even in adversity. Let’s have disagreements, but always with respect.
Long live the city!
Thank you!
