The new ice rink will be built almost in the same location as the old rink. Because the construction is planned in phases, the old rink will remain open for skating during the season.

Future for Amsterdam Skating Enthusiasts

Councilor Sofyan Mbarki (Sports and Movement): “It’s great that we now have a beautiful design, thanks to the involvement of all users of the rink. With the new ice rink, we are completing the renewal and sustainability of the Jaap Eden Ice Complex, following the earlier renovation of the iconic outdoor rink. This provides a future for Amsterdam skating enthusiasts, and who knows, there may someday be a second ice rink.”

About the New Rink

The design takes into account the possibility of building a second ice rink on the site in the future. The Jaap Eden Foundation and the ice associations would like this because skating is becoming increasingly popular. There will also be enough parking spaces for cars and bicycles in the design. The entrance to the ice complex will be closer to the 400-meter outdoor rink. The forecourt will become greener and will be open to the public during the day. This way, everyone can enjoy the ice fun.

Collaboration

In the design process, the architect Venhoeven CS, the municipality, the Jaap Eden Foundation, and the ice rink associations worked closely together. All parties look forward to the realization of this design by Venhoeven CS.

Planning

• In June 2025, the environmental permit was requested.
• Construction of the new rink will start in spring 2026.
• Completion is expected, depending on the contractors schedule, between late 2027 and fall 2028.
