The emergency measures at the Overtoomse Sluis are working well. This was demonstrated by a test on Thursday. Therefore, the bridge can reopen on the morning of Friday, November 14 for cars and trams.
Traffic lights will be adjusted for the reopening, and barriers and signs will be removed. This takes some time, so the exact reopening time is not yet clear.
No boats with standing masts
The bridge will remain closed for boats with standing masts, as opening and closing is not possible. Boats that can pass under the bridge may continue to sail.
Traffic and detours
During the closure, car traffic was diverted via Hoofdweg and Zeilstraat. Tram line 1 temporarily took a different route. From Friday, the tram will run its regular route again.
Why the bridge had to close
On Tuesday, November 4, the bridge unexpectedly closed. Research showed that the structure had more damage than previously thought, making it unsafe for (heavy) traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians could still use the bridge.
Temporary measures
The bridge was further examined last week. The temporary emergency measures now provide sufficient support to allow traffic. The damage has not yet been repaired. A plan for permanent repair is being developed. It will become clear in 2026 when this can begin.
