In 2023, we placed pillars on the street in several locations in Jordaan-North, Haarlemmerbuurt, and the Western Canal Belt. This was intended to reduce cut-through traffic and improve traffic safety. However, during a trial period, it became evident that emergency services were more affected than expected. We paused the trial and have now decided not to reinstall the pillars.
Residents and entrepreneurs in these neighborhoods have been experiencing traffic disturbances for years. Think of cut-through traffic, speeding drivers, and nighttime taxis. They are also concerned about traffic safety. Therefore, the district placed pillars on Brouwersgracht, Blauwburgwal, and Prinsengracht. This was intended to ensure that motor vehicles would use the main roads instead of driving through residential streets.
Trial Period
At the end of 2023, we began a trial period. We consulted with emergency services beforehand. However, it quickly became apparent that it took a lot of time for the police, fire department, and ambulance to remove the pillars during emergency calls. Therefore, the trial was paused shortly thereafter.
Pillars Removed Permanently
We have now decided not to reinstall the pillars. This is not only because emergency services have issues, but also because work is currently being done on Raadhuisstraat and Rozengracht. Due to this work, there are detour routes, and the effect of the pillars cannot be accurately measured.
Street Restoration
There are still covered traffic signs in the area. We will remove those soon. We will also restore the pavement on the bridges where the pillars briefly stood. Traffic decisions made for this plan will be revoked.
