Mayor Halsema, the Municipality of Amsterdam, and the Academy of the City challenge young people: come up with creative ideas to make their peers more resilient against harmful online content.

Youth are daily active on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and Discord. Here they find inspiration, build friendships, and develop their identity. But not every online environment is innocent. Some digital bubbles spread sexism, racism, or extreme ideals. The competition SUBCULTURED calls on young people to come up with ideas to counter this in a way that appeals to their peers.

Ideas

Young people can submit their idea and choose the form themselves. It can be anything from educational material for school or a policy proposal to a digital tool, campaign, performance, video, or something completely different. As long as it is creative, feasible, and effective.

Conditions

  • You are between 17 and 25 years old.
  • You study or have studied (graduated no more than 1.5 years ago) at an mbo, hbo, or wo institution in Amsterdam.
  • You participate alone or with a team of up to 3 people.
  • You identify with the subject based on your own experience, environment, or interest.

What participants receive

Selected participants receive guidance from experts, creators, and experienced professionals. In addition, they have a chance to win €1,000 prize money per person for education, training, or a conference of their choice. They also have the opportunity to pitch their concept to Mayor Halsema and receive an invitation to the award ceremony and reception at the mayors official residence.

Registration

If you meet the conditions and have a good idea, send your motivation, CV, and a short pitch of no more than 5 sentences by January 29 to dorien@academievandestad.nl.
