Prins Hendrikkade East will become much safer for cyclists and pedestrians. From the end of 2025, motor vehicles will only be allowed to drive 30 kilometers per hour. We aim to increase traffic safety with this measure, which is a long-standing wish of residents.
The busy quay, which runs from Kromme Waal to Kattenburgerplein, is one of the last streets in the city center where a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour is still allowed. Most surrounding roads already have a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour. Therefore, it is a logical step to adjust the speed limit on Prins Hendrikkade East as well.
Why are we doing this?
Evaluations of the urban 30 km/h project show that on similar roads, the average speed decreases by over 10 percent and the number of accidents significantly decreases. Slower driving can save lives. By introducing a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour, we meet the wishes of residents and make the quay safer for everyone who cycles, walks, or drives there.
How are we going to do this?
To lower the speed limit and communicate this to road users, we will install signs and clear markings. This has also been successfully done in other places in the city. Therefore, there will be no speed bumps or other major changes.
Future Perspective
Major maintenance of the quay itself is scheduled for the period 2028-2032. During this maintenance, the sewage system and bridges will also be addressed.
