This year, a total of 477 tons of Christmas trees were collected in Amsterdam and Weesp. The waste collection picked up the Christmas trees at over 2,300 temporary drop-off points. We process the collected Christmas trees into compost and biomass to generate sustainable energy.
Most Christmas trees were collected in the South (118 tons) and East (93 tons) districts. The total of 477 tons is higher than previous years. In 2025 it was 442 tons and in 2024 it was 468 tons.
Collection
Due to winter weather, we had to pause collection a few times. Many inner roads were impassable for large collection vehicles because of snow and ice. To catch up on delays, employees worked extra shifts and we extended collection by a week.
Over 100,000 kilos of compost
From the Christmas trees we collect, we can make more than 100,000 kilos of compost. We use this for our parks and green spaces. Additionally, collecting Christmas trees separately at special drop-off points prevents trees from lying in the streets everywhere.
More reports
During the drop-off period in January, we received 729 reports about Christmas trees. In 2025, there were 624. The increase in reports is due to the waste collection having to pause work in the second week of January because of winter weather. The number of reports rose sharply then but decreased again once collection resumed.
Drop-off points
In the coming period, we will remove all 2,300 signs at the drop-off points. This will take until early February. The waste collection will still make extra rounds this week to pick up the last Christmas trees. People who still want to dispose of their Christmas tree after this week can do so at one of the Recycling Points. See Recycling Point for residents.
