On Wednesday, thousands gathered along the IJ, awaiting the first tall ships. Horns sounded in the distance, flags waved in the wind: SAIL-In 2025 had begun. Here’s a small impression of the atmosphere.
Those arriving by ferry from Buiksloterweg find themselves right in the midst of the hustle and bustle. “I must say, this looks well-prepared,” says a woman as she walks up to the quay. Her companion nods: “Yes, everything is going very smoothly.”
Front Row Seats
Closer to Central Station, it gets even busier. Lines of spectators stand behind the barriers that keep the crowd in order. “I reserved my spot this morning. I want front row seats,” a man proudly states as he taps his folding chair.
Calm at Eye
At Eye, a relaxed atmosphere hangs in the air. People sit on blankets along the quay eating their packed lunches, while children dip their feet in the water. A boy paddling by is cheered on from the shore.
Towards NDSM
Along the steps and walls of the IJ promenade, people sit close together. Their gazes turn upwards to the masts rising in the distance.
At NDSM, it becomes quieter: families and groups of friends settle along the quay, cameras at the ready. “From here, you can see the ships coming in beautifully,” someone says as they adjust their lens.
On the Water
It’s still calm along the quay when the first tall ships arrive. Ron and Linda are perfectly positioned with their boat. “We’ve only been here for an hour, so it’s just luck,” Ron says. “Or thanks to Linda’s contrarian Belgian approach,” he adds with a smile.
Pure Enjoyment
They raise their glasses. “You couldn’t ask for a better spot,” laughs Linda. “This is pure enjoyment.” The two love being on the water. “I’ve always sailed,” Ron shares. “But three years ago, I traded my sailboat for this little boat.” They plan to sleep on board tonight. Tomorrow morning, they will sail past the tall ships and then through the canals. “That’s what I’m looking forward to the most,” Linda concludes.
Looking Ahead
In the coming days, the tall ships will be in the IJ harbor. Visitors can board, participate in activities, and enjoy music and culture along the quays.
