To prevent slipperiness caused by winter weather, we spread salt on the main routes throughout the city for cars, cyclists, and public transport from November 1 to April 15. During this period, we closely monitor the weather forecast.

If slipperiness is predicted, we spread salt as a precaution. We usually do this in the middle of the night before the morning rush hour starts. We also clear snow and spread salt during winter showers.

4.5 million kilos of salt

There are 76 salt spreaders and snow plows ready. We have 4.5 million kilos of salt and 6 employees who monitor weather conditions together with weather experts. This way, we know when to spread salt. Last winter (2024-2025), the salt spreaders were deployed 21 times to spread salt throughout the city. They went out 9 times to salt only the bridges.

Main routes

We combat slipperiness on the main routes in the city to keep Amsterdam and the surrounding municipalities accessible. The roads must be safe for public transport, cars, and bicycles. Even during a severe winter with extreme cold and snowfall, we first ensure these routes are safe for traffic.

What you can do yourself

We do not spread salt on sidewalks and footpaths. During snowfall, you can sweep your own sidewalk. And maybe also that of your neighbors if they are less mobile or elderly. In some places in the city, there are salt bins with spreading salt for slippery spots where we do not spread salt. You can use the salt in these bins yourself against slipperiness at these locations. It is not intended that this spreading salt is taken home. For your own sidewalk, you can use kitchen salt or buy spreading salt at the hardware store.
